A Great Cormorant had to be rescued from the Anglesea River, near Coogoorah Park. It was found entangled in fishing line, and people from Ecologic approached it in a canoe.

They lifted the bird onto the canoe and removed the fishing line from its badly damaged wing. They also found a fish hook embedded in its chest. The bird was taken to the vet for treatment. Since that occurred, another three cormorants have been found in the river, entangled in fishing line. Unfortunately all three birds had drowned. There is fishing line wrapped around tree branches along the river, as well as under water around the bridge supports. This poses a deadly hazard for perching and diving birds. Carelessly discarded fishing line is a very real environmental problem.
